Playground Pflanzgartenplatz
The redesign of the Plant Garden Playground area in northern Berlin-Köpenick was carried out with active participation from residents and children of a nearby elementary school.
The playground is located in a protected garden monument area with villa-style buildings. Heritage conservation requirements were considered alongside ecological aspects: Rainwater is absorbed on-site through permeable surfaces and adjacent planting and play areas.
The central, unpaved gathering area was preserved to protect the large tree. A spacious platform made of hardwood serves as a play island, seating, and storage space in the shade. A 7-meter slackline, a hopscotch circle, and two benches complement the offerings. The sand play area was expanded and enclosed with clinker brick walls. A modeled water play hill made of natural stone, boulders, and granite slabs invites water-based play. Stop valves and an adjacent seating area complete this section.
The existing table tennis table was relocated, and additional wooden pedestals provide spaces for relaxing. A new triple swing adds to the play options. Surrounding the existing tree, a fall protection area bordered with Robinia trunks and boulders protects the root zone and also functions as a balancing and seating element. To the east, the play zone was expanded, and the lawn area was newly fenced.
An engaging climbing course made of hardwood with nets, a hanging bridge, climbing wall, and hanging track offers greater play incentives for older children. This area is complemented by a planted hill with a slide on the slope.
All materials meet ecological and child-friendly standards. The existing trees were preserved, planting areas were naturally renovated, and complemented with low-maintenance native shrubs.
