German Urban Development Award 2025 – Special Prize “Reconstruction Culture of the Circular City”: Commendation for the Alte Mälzerei

We are very pleased: Alte Mälzerei in Berlin-Lichtenrade was awarded a special prize at the German Urban Development Award 2025.

The industrial monument from 1898 is today the identity-forming center of the new Lichtenrade quarter. With cultural and commercial uses as well as broad citizen participation, a lively place has emerged that makes the past tangible while also forging a new identity.

Our office designed the open space, initially around Alte Mälzerei itself. Later, the exterior spaces of the entire district followed, whose center is Alte Mälzerei.

We congratulate all participants and are pleased to be part of this special project.
