Urban Quarter Lichtenrade – Alte Mälzerei
On the site of the Alte Mälzerei in the center of Lichtenrade, Berlin, a low-car, lively, and climate-adapted urban quarter is being developed, featuring around 250 new rental apartments and connecting open spaces. The listed buildings Alte Mälzerei and the Landhaus Lichtenrade significantly shape the overall character of the neighborhood. In addition to the careful renovation of the Alte Mälzerei itself, which will house gastronomic, cultural, and commercial uses, several new residential buildings are being constructed.
A spacious ensemble of outdoor areas will be created on the large site, inviting both residents and visitors. The open spaces include a central marketplace, a town square, and a pedestrian promenade that connect the different areas of the quarter. Playgrounds, water features, and seating areas invite people to linger and are surrounded by climate-adapted, biodiversity-promoting planting. The blue-green infrastructure plan integrates measures for rainwater infiltration via swale trenches with bridging grid elements.
Lushly planted courtyards, a naturalistic daycare outdoor area, and an intensively greened rooftop terrace provide retreat and relaxation spaces for children, residents, and visitors alike.
