Playground Lohmühlenstraße
The playground at Görlitzer railway embankment has been comprehensively refurbished and expanded from 143 m² to around 1.300 m². The aim was to create an attractive play and movement landscape for all ages, while enhancing safety in public space — and all without fences. As part of a participatory process, residents, visitors to the playground, and children from Kiefholz Primary School were actively invited to share their wishes and ideas for the redesign.
The large, popular wave slide was retained, with safer access. The offering is complemented by a calisthenics fitness area, an additional slide on the slope, a sloped ramp, a small parcours inviting climbing and balancing, and a climbing pyramid. Next to it, a suspended-band balance beam was installed over the former wall strip.
Numerous seating areas and meeting points were created, among other features, via concrete seating terraces and gradually stepped granite slab surfaces. Natural, sustainable materials such as robinia timber, natural stone, boulders, and granite edging contribute to the ecological quality. Resilient planting, including 15 new trees, bee- and bird-friendly shrubs, and native, hardy shrubs, improves the microclimate and supports increased biodiversity. In addition, rainwater will now soak away locally on-site.
